Futraheat and Noble Ox

For this project, Noble Ox was commissioned by Neil Davidson, an industry leader when it comes to low carbon communications. We had both worked on the Mocean Energy project as separate entities, but this was a welcome opportunity to work together. We were delighted when Neil approached us to collaborate.

The Noble Ox brief included:

Brand name and definition – to define a distinctive, confident and consistent tone of voice

Visual Identity – creation of strong, hard-working identity to reflect the new brand

Website scoping and keyword approach – to support the longer term digital strategy

There is always a challenge with the language of technology and industry R&D. How do we translate the concepts, science and engineering into meaningful words to engage and inspire target audiences, without losing the integrity of the technology itself?

We got stuck in using the Noble Ox tried and tested branding process. This includes an in depth client workshop and follow up, extensive desk research into the sector, then the painstaking drafting process.

The final brand definition paved the way for the rest of the project, including the creative design brief and digital approach. It was great to work with our long-term creative partners Frank Design on the logo and encompassing visual identity. Noble Ox project managed the design process whilst also carrying out the digital scoping, including the keyword research to inform the client’s longer term digital content strategy.

We were really pleased to receive this great feedback from Neil,

“Working with Noble Ox has been really useful in helping start-up clients quickly and easily develop a clear brand identity. Charlotte’s straightforward approach simplifies the ‘brand definition’ process. She has been invaluable in helping clients create a strong, clear identity which can be rolled out using her expertise in website scoping and keywords to develop a strong digital presence.”

Futraheat and the clean industrial revolution

There is an urgent need for industry to drastically reduce its carbon emissions, most of which result directly from on-site heat generation. Futraheat is ready to revolutionise how industry’s heat demands are met by pioneering the global adoption of high temperature heat pumps with a new, clean turbo-compressor technology.

Futraheat’s ethos is as straightforward as its technology:

Develop the most cost-effective heat recovery products

Work with like-minded partners for global reach

Accelerate the clean industrial revolution

Here’s a quick insight into Futraheat and its technology.
As you can see, it is simple and revolutionary.
The opportunity to work with startup ventures has always been a joy. Noble Ox loves to demystify the task of Branding for any business, new or established. We enjoy helping entrepreneurs bring their concepts to life in a way that truly reflects the ‘who, what, why and how.’ Importantly, we help explore and define these essentials to make it easier to engage with others, effectively and with integrity.

We also believe like attracts like. So, thankfully, most new business comes our way through recommendation.

Zoom Brand Workshop for Edinburgh Business School

This summer, a happy ECCI Brand Workshop attendee from a couple of years ago recommended Noble Ox. From there, Kallum Russell, Edinburgh Business School Incubator Manager, approached us to host a 2 hour Zoom Seminar for his students.

My first request was to change the name from Seminar to Workshop. I was keen to ensure the session was as interactive as possible and not two hours of yours truly ‘centre screen’ with my lockdown hair!

In a nutshell, I took the Brand Workshop that I’ve used and fine tuned over the years and adapted it to Zoom. It went really well.

I had a great response to the initial icebreaker, and then the short, sweet presentation I screen-shared to set the scene. The following breakout session in pairs worked well too. I was really pleased with the ground that had been covered, when we came back together to feedback progress made.

Yes, but how was it for them?

It was a great group to work with, they really did engage with the process. I had a good feeling about the way it had gone. But how was it for them? I was delighted when I received individual emails from the group taking me up on the 1-2-1 mentoring follow up.

A couple of days later, I received the students’ official post-workshop feedback:

“Many thanks for your session – it was excellent.”
“A well-organised workshop with clear instructions and tool to follow.”
“The 1-2-1 break out was great, with very good leading questions.”
“The Noble Ox session was very accessible and insightful – it certainly sparked A LOT of thoughts for me.”
“Thanks for the excellent seminar– it was indeed helpful in helping define the idea around my brand.”
“I haven’t incorporated my company yet, but it will definitely give me a clear direction right at the very start.”

Edinburgh Business School Incubator Manager, Kallum Russell, was also happy to feedback:

“Charlotte’s knowledge of branding is only matched by her genuine warmth and enthusiasm for helping others. She is really passionate about helping those she works with to: simplify their messaging, articulate the offering and put being human at the heart of everything they do. This may sound obvious and simple. However, it can very difficult to do in practice! Too many businesses hide behind jargon, corporate-speak and being “professional”.

“Charlotte shared her insights and the Noble Ox framework to help the Incubees develop brands for their own businesses, during a very interactive workshop.

“I have no hesitation in recommending Noble Ox and I look forward to working with Charlotte again”.

Reset with a Zoom Brand Workshop

2020 is a year like no other and whether your business is starting out or well established, the likelihood is you are also re-visiting aspects of the ‘who, what, why and how.’

The beauty of the Noble Ox Workshop approach is that it brings people together and it works. It works within any business or organisation, an ideal way to facilitate discussion, unite your team, review where you’re at and define the way forward. Equally, it works well as part of a business incubation programme.

Your next step

Simply get in touch with Noble Ox to discuss how this approach can help make life easier.

PerformancePro

PerformancePro’s state-of-the-art athlete grade gym and personal training centre relaunched in January 2016.

By the time we met, they had their gym, brand and website up and running. What they needed now was a trusted pair of hands to help bring their brand to life online. The Noble Ox mission was to create and deliver regular campaigns via posts on the website and joined up email and social media activity.

Intelligent fitness – fit for the job

Noble Ox was recommended to PerformancePro by our good friends and creative partners Frank Design. Before we accepted the job, I wanted to meet the guys and get a feel for what they were really about. After all, certain aspects of the fitness industry and its bandwagons are almost as dubious as the dodgier side of the brand marketing industry!

To be honest, it’s unlikley Frank Design would have recommended Noble Ox if there was any whiff of that, but a ‘chemistry meet’ is always a good idea. I also suggested we threw in a fitness consultation whilst we were at it so I could get a feel for their approach. I think our new potential client appreciated my genuine interest, so I packed my gym kit and notebook and headed for London’s West End.

A good fit from the start

From the moment I walked into PerformancePro, it was clear the guys cared about what they did and wanted to differentiate their service from the mainstream. We shared a no-nonsense approach and a very real desire to be honest about what and how we communicated. I liked them and their down-to-earth enthusiasm was contagious.

The topline Noble Ox brief included:

support launch of the new PerformancePro website

deliver new client target every month via a sustained digital marketing approach

help support client retention via online affinity building

The three PerformancePro directors were very open to the recommended Noble Ox approach which included:

recce of local area, a personal training consultation, meeting the team and and some existing clients

audit and review of all existing and launch content including imagery and media coverage to date

review of the new website with recommendations to improve prior to launch

database/twitter/FB recce to inform digital approach

devise recommended digital approach to support the launch event

pre and post launch support with, 4 x joined-up weekly email, mini-blog and supporting SM campaigns to drive traffic (therefore search engines) to key areas of the new website

preparation of future content approach including the first 6 x monthly campaign themes

Day to day with PerformancePro

Following the success of the launch, Noble Ox quickly settled into the day to day activity required. This focusses on the creation, roll out and monitoring of one or two monthly blog and email campaigns amplified via weekly social media.

The guys at PerformancePro know their stuff so there’s endless inspiration for creating and building upon a growing archive of Fitness Insights. Noble Ox also writes team, client and partner profiles on a regular basis. We enjoy interviewing people and getting to the real stories behind the brand.

With regular editorial meetings, Noble Ox helps shape PerformancePro’s content calendar by joining up themes and ensuring some pre-planning. Wherever possible, we make life and decision-making easier for the client! And we’re always at the end of the phone for those last minute requests.

“The synergy between Noble Ox and PerformancePro was immediately apparent. The speed at which Noble Ox assimilated who we were and what we do cemented a strong relationship early on. Listening and ‘realising’ our usually jumbled briefs has proved key in our growth plan. The quality of our relationship has meant honesty is always welcome, as we work together to overcome hurdles, solve problems and deliver.”
Dan Boulle – PerformancePro Founder and Director

“Working with Noble ox has moved our business up a gear, we now understand how digital marketing can influence potential customers into sales.”
Anthony Purcell – PerformancePro Founder and Director

It’s genuinely a pleasure to work with PerformancePro and interesting to learn about the world of health and fitness. Needless to say, I also took on board the feedback from that initial personal fitness consultation. Over the last couple of years, I’ve invested a little more time and effort into keeping more than Noble Ox fit for the job!

Ava Innes – the Noble Ox brief

Once again, Noble Ox was recommended following our successful and enjoyable work with Clean Water Wave. Deadlines were tight, so we worked quickly with Joan to identify how best Noble Ox could help. The brief was as follows:

Brand definition for Ava Innes – to establish strong, confident positioning and tone of voice

Brochure copywriting and video script – following the brand definition, Noble Ox wrote the Ava Innes launch brochure and video script

Website content creation and keyword approach – in line with brand definition and digital strategy

Sleeping under cashmere

From start to finish, this job was a joy. Not only did we learn a thing or two about cashmere and the traditional Afghan and Mongolian goat herders, we also discovered more about the textile industry in Scotland and Yorkshire.

Thanks to Joan’s knowledge, experience and passion, we had so much to work with. There was such a story to tell.

When it came to the brand definition, the challenge was to distil and fine tune. The aim is to find that golden thread of language that would engage, differentiate and resonate with the target audience.

An extract from Ava Innes Brand Definition,

The search for sustainable luxury is shared by many of us. It’s a quest that lies at the heart of AVA INNES and is woven into every layer of our beautiful bedding.

For AVA INNES, luxury is defined by ‘doing good, by doing better.’ It’s about the quality and sustainability of the natural materials we use and the relationships we forge, from supporting traditional cashmere goat herders, to textile workers closer to home and all those enjoying the simple luxury of sleeping under cashmere.

AVA INNES is based in Elgin, home of Scotland’s renowned cashmere industry. We take great pride in honouring this traditional craft, as we champion a fresh ethical perspective within the industry and lead the way with the first cashmere duvet, made in the UK.

Ava Innes sustainable luxury, natural integrity

Once established, the rest of the project flows naturally from the brand definition. It was great to see how well it worked when it came to writing the brochure and video script. We were able to weave in the threads of language which were now accompanied by very beautiful imagery.

For the website, we teased out further threads as we researched the best selection of keywords and keyword phrases to use. We then blended these effectively into the content we developed so that the Ava Innes website would work well with humans and search engines!

Joan was very happy to share her thoughts on working with Noble Ox,

“From the first phone call meeting, I realised Charlotte understood who we were and what we wanted to be. Over a tight timescale, she constructed our brand definition, developed the tone of voice and helped articulate our values. This led onto the content for our brochure, a promotional video and content for our website.

“Charlotte was a delight to work with. I have no hesitation in recommending Noble Ox.”

Snuggle up with the Ava Innes Brochure 2019 and find out more about sleeping under cashmere…

You and Noble Ox

Over the years, Noble Ox has helped a whole range of organisations to define and present their brands.
Mocean’s founder Dr Cameron McNatt was impressed with the Noble Ox approach, so much so that a couple of years later he got back in touch. Mocean Energy had just been awarded significant funding from the Scottish Government. The humble startup was now to become a major force in Scotland’s transition to renewable energy and they needed some help.

Mocean Energy – redefining the future

We worked with the Mocean team to develop The Noble Ox Brief as follows:

Brand definition – to define a distinctive, confident and consistent tone of voice

Visual Identity – creation of strong, hard-working identity to reflect the Mocean Energy brand

Delivery of a new website – to support business objectives

It was a joy to help Mocean Energy define itself in a way that ‘translates’ their science-led technical approach. Mocean’s pioneering, high performance technology is helping accelerate the essential transition needed to secure the world’s renewable, carbon-free energy supply. A healthier ocean, a healthier planet and a healthier future.

It’s important that such essential technology is communicated in a way that connects and engages effectively. The dedication and a shared vision of co-founders Dr Cameron McNatt and Dr Chris Retzler lie at the heart of the brand,

“There’s nowhere else to go except into the blue, but it cannot be a wild frontier. We need a new knowledge-driven consciousness so we can protect the oceans while meeting human needs.”

This project also gave Noble Ox the opportunity to work with favourite design partners, Frank Design. Equipped with the brand definition and the look and feel, the next stage was to develop the Website scope and brief, including an effective SEO keyword approach.

We were very pleased and proud of our work with Mocean Energy. We were also delighted to receive great feedback from Dr McNatt,

“Noble Ox has a structured process that helped us not just develop our brand but understand our identity so that our brand truly reflected our positioning, values and vision. What drew us to Noble Ox was Charlotte’s clear passion for marketing and helping clients achieve their aims with their companies.

“We’re very proud of the brand we developed with Noble Ox.
Blockchain is also the missing link

From the outside in, a company involved with the Blockchain revolution runs the gauntlet of public cynicism and corporate giant protectionism. The mention of any activity derived from the same technology as crypto currency can be met with suspicion.

Equipped with nothing but my healthy curiosity and Noble Ox’s enduring professional service, I went to meet the good folk at Wallet Services.

Noble Ox had been shortlisted, so no doubt this potential client had already been bamboozled by the countless jargon-fuelled processes of other brand agencies. When we met, I’m sure I felt a palpable sense of relief in the room.

Wallet Services seemed to welcome the down to earth, honest and jargon-free approach Noble Ox was proposing. Similarly, it was clear that the people at Wallet Services know who they are and why what they do is exceptional and has the potential to transform society for the good.

The Noble Ox brief

Noble Ox got the job and yes the job was more than a little daunting! Obviously, there’s an inherent complexity to the technology behind the business of data collection, storage and sharing. Not to mention the significant impact on people’s rights, privacy and ultimately their security. However, Wallet Services were very clear from the start that the Noble Ox brief was to help find the language needed to find the missing link ie. Brand Definition.

The first step was to facilitate a group session with the whole team round the table. Everyone had their say, from the founders, directors and the true techies to the student interns.

The role of Noble Ox was to put people at ease and get them talking. I asked the right questions, then pinned back my ears, taking copious notes and recordings. Where needed I was able to drill down, to help the team explore and express what they really meant and felt about what they did, why and how.

It was a very productive and enjoyable session. The Noble Ox follow up not only captured other thoughts beyond the worskhop but also the team’s appreciation of our approach,

“We thoroughly enjoyed working with Noble Ox. I think there might have been some technology scepticism when we tried to drag everybody together to look at brand and messaging, but the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. The team found it a useful and necessary exercise.”
Peter Ferry – Wallet Services Co-founder and Commercial Director

All the right notes…

By far the most challenging stage of any brand definition project is when I sit at my desk with all the source material at my finger tips. This includes written and recorded feedback from the workshop and follow-up from different people. We also request business plans, strategy documents, online content, past marketing material and media coverage plus competitor analysis.

I call this the ‘kitchen sink’ stage ie. we actively encourage the client to share as much as possible, so we have plenty to work with. There’s reassurance all round that no stone is left unturned. After all, effective brand definition has to be thoroughly researched and confidently rooted.

But, as Eric Morecombe once said, ‘I may have all the notes,’ but at this stage, ‘they’re not necessarily in the right order!’

The missing link is the truth well told

So where to start to ensure Noble Ox does justice and tells the truth well? Thankfully, my self-prescribed total immersion works as it’s comprehensive. I know I have all I need. From there it’s a question of reading, defining, drafting and refining.

Obviously there’s more to it than just word wrangling, the process requires the right balance of intuition and sensitivity to make sure the true essence of the brand shines through.

Thankfully, Noble Ox is good at this. After all this is what we’re all about, putting ourselves in the shoes of our clients AND their target audience. We find the missing link between the two.

The success of our work for Wallet Services speaks for itself as the brand definition we created is now woven throughout their communications. Siccar’s Blockchain service has a clear, confident and consistent tone of voice which differentiates it in the market place and effectively engages target audiences.

Your next step

Whatever your business does, it needs to define and connect with itself, so in turn it can connect effectively with the marketplace. Inevitably, most companies have a few missing links in these chains of connection.

Contact Noble Ox so we can find the missing link and help you connect.

With Damian’s creative expertise we were able to make the most of the client’s existing photography to help keep the budget tight without compromising the design quality.

When the brochure arrived Dr Nick described it as ‘jaw droppingly beautiful’ and even admitted to having a wee tear in his eye! Here is just a sample of some of the brochure pages, including front and back covers, and inner page layouts.

Education is the building block to peace and prosperity. This belief lies at the heart of Link’s ethos and we wholeheartedly agree.
Noble Ox was recommended by Dr Nick Hepworth at Water Witness International. We have worked with WWI over the years and we were very proud to be recommended by them.

About Link

Link Community Development International is an Edinburgh-based charity whose team envisage a world where every child in sub-Saharan Africa has access to a quality basic education. Over the last 25 years, they have helped nearly 2 million students in over 3,000 schools in Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, Uganda and Rwanda access a better quality education.

The team works directly with government staff, district education officers, communities and schools by providing support and training for more effective teaching, improved school management and increased community engagement.

The Noble Ox Brief

Inspired by the success of a Noble Ox brochure job for Water Witness International, Link was looking for an on and offline publication to effectively communicate its ethos and showcase the work they do.

Working with our valued design partners at Transform Creative, we devised an approach which would not just suit budget and timescales BUT would deliver above and beyond both!

We used our client’s existing photography and created eye-catching infographics to illustrate their approach and the amazing results they achieve by transforming lives through learning.

It was a joy working with the Link team. In true Noble Ox fashion, we helped guide the process and decision-making needed to make sure we created an engaging brochure which worked hard for them.

Mission was accomplished! So much so, the first job was quickly followed by another. This time it was a brochure to showcase the results from a Girls’ Education Project in Ethiopia.

In addition to the two main brochures, we also helped with basic report template designs etc. It’s great to know that the work we’ve done is not just helping Link communicate with its audiences in the developed world; we’re helping in the classroom too!

Client Feedback from Link

We were delighted with the work we did, but more importantly so was our client,

‘Noble Ox and Transform provided excellent, responsive and reliable project management, client liaison and creative delivery required to produce two high quality and impactful brochures demonstrating the work of Link Community Development International. Their work has been delivered on time and within budget. We are an international development NGO and Noble Ox has shown an intrinsic understanding and sensitivity of the value and importance of our work and the audience for which it is created.’
Dr. Samantha Ross, International Programme Director, Link
